The Lived Experience Programme

Breaking down the barriers of equality and discrimination through community engagement

A Vibrant Blend of New and Old

The Lived Experience Programme is a new initiative born of deep rooted traditions.

Niburu London has always sought to harness the experience and celebrate life journey’s of its core members and local community. From workshop delivery to planning, creative design to administration Niburu London draws upon their expertise.

Our new series of projects engages more deeply with this ethos, actively creating a dynamic project structure seeded deeply in the experience and attributes of the Niburu team and community partners.

A Trustee Initiative

The Together at the Table Project is the inspiration of Niburu London Trustee, Norman Allen. The essence of the project is to create a support group which exists to embrace and include those suffering with Cancer, a space where participants Cook Together, Eat and Share Fellowship in whatever discussions or chats that follow in a relaxed informal environment.   The hope is that at the end of a Together at the Table session, users have a heart-warming experience that cultivates a sense of well-being, in conclusion, a time well spent.

Norman describes his desire to create support and inspiration for the project in the words below:

“Ever since going through my own personal cancer journeys to the point of remission, I have had this desire to setup a support activity, to help those going through their own journey, at whatever point they may be at.  However, I’ve always envisaged this idea being an inclusive gathering, where participants, cook, chat, discuss and commune together to support each other in an informal setting. In the past, I’ve attended Cancer Support groups and have benefited greatly from being part of such a support group subsequently inspiring my passion, for a project such as this“.

Music From the Heart

Niburu are supporting a currently unemployed local resident who has a deep passion for making music with over 30 years’ experience in music creation, and performance with a variety of artists, singers and musicians.

Being a father, he felt many young people were missing out on the intrinsic benefits of playing a live instrument.  The subtle quality of playing notes on a guitar or piano; the meditative focus and inner connection experienced when drumming.  Though his own experience and those of his children, he has developed an understanding of the organic relationship between the instrument and the individual.  Creating an opportunity for young people to engage with the musical experience and connect with their unique individuality can dramatically increase feeling of wellbeing, bringing positive changes in the individual’s behaviour and thought processes.  In a world where digitally created music is increasingly accessible, the simple act of playing a musical instrument has an opportunity to bring harmony to the individual and wider community.

With his creative ideologies and a strong desire to give back to his local community, we teamed up with Exodus Youth Worx UK and NYCC (Northside Youth & Community Connexions) to run live music workshops for their young people. This has been such an enjoyable process, where learning is shared by all involved and the improvement in the musical experience of the young people involved is a joy to behold.

We have been able to support Loui with administration e.g. DBS check, lesson feedback sheets, image release forms, wellbeing assessments etc. The next stage will be to provide CPD training, enabling him to grow as a Tutor/Facilitator, thus providing him with the relevant vocational qualification to become employed in the work for which he has a passion.
